North Harrison Holds Emergency Drill

| On Monday, October 23rd, in cooperation with the Eagleville Fire, EMT's
and First Responders, the North Harrison School, grades K-12, participated
in an emergency drill that included explosions in the HVAC room and the
Science Lab; complete with injured students and faculty.
Normally, we have 20 juniors and seniors attending the North Central Career Center in Bethany but Vo-Tech was not in session so those students "volunteered" to be accident victims. Students were able to experience some of the problems that could arise in the event of a larger emergency at NHHS. Also, students were able to observe local emergency services in action and see how important their behavior and help would be in an emergency. Life Flight, from St. Joseph, made a landing on the softball field and demonstrated how quickly they can get here, load, and take off. Skyler Parkhurst exclaimed in a paper she wrote about the experience, "It would be really scary if that ever did happen. I hope that no one really would get hurt. I think that we would all listen and be calm enough and smart enough that we could get out of the building without getting hurt." After the drill, 7-12 students met in the gymnasium and listened to pros and cons of the drill and to pointers that could be life-saving in an emergency. Eagleville Fire Chief, John Miller; North Harrison Ambulance Member, Verna Osborn and, NTA Ambulance Member, Brandon Fordyce, all spoke to the NHHS student body. There was a great turnout from all three of those emergency services as well as the Life Flight appearance, showing that everyone realizes the need for emergency planning, especially when it involves our children. The staff, students and administration of NHHS are very grateful for the participation of all those emergency professionals and volunteers. Monday was an early-out day, for teacher in-service, and part of that in-service time was spent discussing things we can do to improve our district's new Emergency Operation Plan. Our safety committee and area emergency personnel, plan to have another joint training exercise next spring as we continue to consider the safety of our students and staff. Thanks again, to those who helped with the planning and execution of the emergency drill. Story by Mark Fletcher, High School Principal ~ Photos by Natalie McFall |
